Disneyland adventures

We just got home from Disneyland and from a week and a half of Kearns family time.  My parents are very generous and my mom especially treasures getting her kids and grandkids together.  I'm amazed at her love and energy to make it happen.  She flew to Texas to pick up Andrew and Bailey.  Ryan and Sarah just had baby Megan and so they stayed home.  Mom flew the Kearns kids back to Fremont for the week and then we all flew together to the OC for 3 days at the Disneyland resort.

Lukas was so excited for his cousins to come and stay at his house.  He talked about it for weeks before they came.  Once we got home from church on Sunday, he burst through the door, ran full steam towards his cousins, and started hollering.  The boys all started to play together right away.  Little Bailey would get tired of all the "boy play" and wander around the house by herself.  At night the kids had a big sleepover and usually Lukas and Bailey crashed out first.  Kai and Andrew stayed up late talking.  The first night I peeked my head in and they looked so cute lying with their faces toward each other, elbows propped up, and talking in low voices about the universe and Adam and Eve.  During their Fremont visit, we went to Happy Hallow, saw the Minions movie, and went to the water park.  Fun times, but man, I'm exhausted!  And the fun didn't stop there...
Who's ready for Disneyland?!
We all hopped in the plane and headed to the Disneyland Hotel.  It was really nice!  There were lots of Disney touches such as our bed headboard lit up into fireworks and played a little music box lullaby.  The bathroom sink faucets were shaped with Mickey ears and the lights from held up by Mickey hands.
From our hotel window, we had a perfect view of the real fireworks at night.  The kids didn't get to watch them until the last night because they crashed out too early to see them.
Of course my sweet tooth sweetie wanted some of the 60th anniversary cupcakes

Getting ready for the pool
One of the other really cool things about our hotel other than that it was within walking distance of the parks was the pool area.  The pool area had 2 swimming pools and one splash zone with 3 slides next to old school monorail decorations. We went swimming 2 of the days because most of the days were very hot.  The weather though was very unusual.  It was hot during the day and rained Saturday night.  After our hot morning at California Adventure on Sunday, we went back to go swimming and the weather started to get cold and breezy.  It rained that afternoon and night.  Mom and dad went to California Adventure after dinner and enjoyed the rides in the rain.  On Monday, it got hot again and everything was going okay.  Mom and Ryuta took Andrew and Kai to Thunder Mountain.  Dad and I took Lukas and Bailey to Winnie the Pooh.  After the ride, we found a shady spot to stop, check our phones, and figure out where to go next.  The next thing you know... Lukas is toppled over the railing with his head crashed down on some river rocks screaming and thick blood dripping from his head.  I picked him up and ran him to the nearest snack shack to get ice or help.  The Disneyland employees were excellent at attending to us and trying to be helpful.  I need to write a thank you card to the nurse Vivver and the security guard Lisa.   They were very, very good to us.  Lukas had a gash in the back of his head that wasn't big, but it was deep and cut all the way through his skin.  Ryuta and I grabbed a taxi to the nearest Kaiser to urgent care.  We waited awhile and the doctor ended up putting a staple in Lukas' head.  Now, if you've never experienced your kid's head getting stapled and you are faint at heart, I don't recommend it.  It was just a little traumatic for everyone.  Luckily, I had a lollipop on hand.  Unluckily, the doctor got it wrong and had to pull out the staple which was just as traumatic and do the stapling one more time! Ah!  We spoiled Lukas after with candy and found Star Wars cereal at the store across the street.  After which he was back in good spirits and didn't seem to mind the big ole bandage on his head.  Mom and dad said they could watch the kids that night so that Ryuta and I could go back to Disneyland.  All was well with Fastpass tickets, etc., but then... I reached into my back pocket and my phone was gone!  This was icing on top of the cake.  The Disney Lost and Found called us the next morning as we were headed to the aiport that they found it and would be mailing it back.
Anyways, here are some happy pictures of our trip:
Check out those monorail slides!

Meeting Mickey
One of the highlights: We got to meet Darth Vader!!!

Join the dark side!

When it was time to say goodbye and take separate planes, it was sweet and sad when Lukas realized that he was saying goodbye and started crying.  Even when we got back to the bay and were driving home, Lukas asked about Andrew and Bailey and started to cry again.  I'm glad that our boys got to spend some time with their only cousins and had some fond memories.

Last days of school and the start of summer

Kai is now done with TK. He had a great year with Mrs. Bass. He loved school and would come home everyday and set up "school" in his room. Although I wonder if it's just Kai or if Mrs. Bass barked at her students the way Kai barks at Lukas. Kai learned a lot this year and really grew up so much!! I feel so confident about him entering kindergarten after a year in TK. He knows all of his numbers and generally understands place values into the hundreds.  He can read and write (from what I know as a 2nd grade teacher) at the 1st grade level. He knows a buttload of facts about maps, geography, outer space.  He also started taking a group piano lesson near our house and despite my initial reservations, he really likes his teacher, Miss Shelly.  I really wanted Kai to participate in SOMETHING! Every time we'd get a flier in Kai's Monday folder from school, I'd ask,"Want to try soccer? Basketball? Karate?" Kai would say no to everything. But he wanted to do piano! He loves it and practices on his own without my asking.
I had an excellent school year and as happy and excited as I always am for summer vacation, I was also sad to see the year end. (1) I was so fortunate to be part of a wonderful grade-level team. Leah was the cutesy, creative one. Emily was the laid back one. Melissa led the group. Everyone contributed. Understandably, Leah needed to find a job closer to home and Emily will move to kinder next year.

(2) I also had honestly one of my favorite classes to date. My students were generally VERY well behaved, sweet, like able kids. I woke up every day excited to see them and happy to go to work.  I'm sad that this golden year has ended. Such precious memories!

As I left my classroom on the last day, we jumped in the car and drove down to San Diego.  Taylor graduated high school and although I wasn't able to be a part of her life, Jenn will always be someone special to me.  I was glad that we got to go down to support the fam.  On the trip down, we ran into RiDiCULOUS traffic due to construction.  It helped that the boys were content and entertained by a Star Wars marathon in the car.  We also stopped for dinner at Denny's and got to watch more of the Warriors finals.

Jenn was the hostess with the mostest for Tay's grad party, beautiful decorations, a taco guy, cake pops, a slideshow. We stayed in a vacation rental with GG, Auntie Laura, Auntie Nani, Monica, Auntie Brenda, and Jacie.  The boys really enjoyed the bunk and baskets of Legos and the hot tub. We went to the beach although the weather was not completely ideal beach weather. I had a nice walk on the beach with my cousins, Monica and Jacie, with a heart-to-heart talk.
On the way home, we stopped in Valencia to visit Ryuta's college friends, Sunghi and Wongyu.  We had such a nice time. They had a beautiful home complete with a massage chair and community pool! Sunghi was super hospitable. The boys enjoyed playing with their girls, Katie and Chloe. Wongyu opened his own restaurant and they treated us. It was SO nice! We were very impressed. Wongyu is the owner and head chef and pours his heart and soul into his restaurant and you can tell! We definitely plan to stop there again in the future.
When we got back, I cleaned the house for a week and tried selling our baby stuff online.  A huge milestone was that we sold our crib. I cried when I saw the empty space where it sat the last 6 years. I know it's just a material object, but it carried so many memories and took with it all the baby dreams. The new dad who came to get it seemed so fresh and I felt how quickly time had passed.

I also got down to business and finished an online class to get more units for my teaching salary. All the while, Ryuta's been studying day and night to pass his state board exam (THIS Friday!!! Omg!!) He finished school and saw the Fremont Beauty School close its doors.
We are so proud of you, Hardeep!!! :) :)
This week, the boys started swim lessons and I foresee lots of time at the watermark this summer. I just can't wait until Ryuta passes his test and can join us.
To be continued...

Star Wars is the new obsession

So, I'm pretty sure that I already mentioned it, but my attempts at the end of January to move on from the Grinch phase was successful. Now it is ALL about Star Wars in our home. I can't say that I totally mind either. Star Wars is cool! The kids are funny though (especially Kai) because he will not go to the movie theater. He said he wants to wait for the new Star Wars movie to come out (in December!!!) oh my. What a kid.
The boys hum the Star Wars theme song all day and play with their light sabers. At first, Ryuta got them swim noodles which became their sabers. Then we upgraded to the real light-up ones at the store with the sound effects as a gift for Lukas' birthday.  Lukas kept talking about his Darth Vader cake during the month of May. He didn't care what we did or if we had a party. He just kept repeating, "June 2nd. My birthday. Darth Vader cake." So, after lots of research...
Lukas was so happy!!! We spent the day at Happy Hallow with tutu and papa and returned home for Darth Vader cake and gifts.
Happy 3rd birthday, Darth Vader!
Our big summer project is converting the boys' room into a big boy room with a bunk bed with Star Wars bed sheets, etc. More pics to come soon!!

Happy Easter

The boys' baskets-- bubbles, chocolate bunnies, Big Hero 6 sticker books, Time magazine about life in the universe for Kai and a Darth Vader shirt for Lukas
Jenn and Josh came for a couple of nights from San Diego. The boys had a great time with their cousins. We told Marisa she can come anytime to babysit or be our nanny.

Winter 2015

Grandma brought home GG's old shoes for me. "Big Grandma" was the spiritual matriarch in our mostly female dominated family. I never knew was a stylin lady she was, too! It's an honor to literally be able to walk in her shoes.
Lukas is ALMOST tall enough for the roller coaster!!! I told him when he turns 3. (Hopefully, he'llbe big  enough in time for Disneyland this summer!!)
Potty training...yeah. It's not going anywhere. Sigh.
 Lazy days by the creek...
I found this hilarious app called "Old Fart Booth."  I used it for the 100th day of school.
So, Kai was obsessed with the Grinch and Christmas well into the month of January. It was getting really out of hand. I thought since he was so obsessed with outer space that it was fitting for the boys to get introduced to Star Wars. They LOVE it!!! Lukas says that he is Darth Vader (not Luke!) and Kai is Darth Grinch (I'm getting a little worried about Halloween this year...)
I got inspired by a mommy acquaintance to start taking the boys outdoors more and attempt to go for nature walks or hikes as often as we could. Here we are by "Little Yosemite" at Sunol regional park.
Here are the boys in their pillow fort. Their friendship is so sweet to see.

Tacky Christmas

Everyone's heard of the "Ugly Christmas Sweater" party. Well, this year I wanted to take it one step further and allow people to go all out in holiday gaudy ness. Why just limit it to just sweaters?!
We had a few competitions. A vote for the tackiest.
Nope. It wasn't me.

Gosh, you'd think he'd win it!
Too cute.

Not him either.
Judy was very creative, but this one didn't win it for tacky.
Actually, I need to upload Alisyn's pic. She was the queen of tacky, the mascot and the standard for future contests.
We also had some minute to win it which was silly and fun. We played Christmas Tree Challenge, Smell the Snow, Face the Cookie, and Antlers.

Here were the leftover rice crispy Christmas trees mom and I made.
Merry Christmas!

The "Grinch" signed thank you cards this year!! :)

2014 Christmas newsletter

Happy holidays from the Sanui family!
Here is a snapshot of 2014 of our family:
Ryuta
Ryuta started on his new journey towards becoming an “o-sha-rey” (stylin’) hair stylist.  He started night and weekend classes at Fremont Beauty School while transitioning into a day-time stay-at-home dad routine.  The days were filled with trips to the park, to Happy Hallow, laundry, and cooking the family meals.  We’ve gotten into a better meal routine and Ryuta has expanded his recipe choices.  With childcare and school, Ryuta hasn’t been able to spend as much time playing tennis, but gets out whenever he can.  He still enjoys SLEEPING(!!!) and manga.  The boys are so lucky to spend a lot of time with their dad!  We are all getting used to the new schedule and Dad’s new hair styles!
"High Maintenance.. You say it like it's a bad thing."
Somer
I finished my first year back to teaching at Weibel and am still there, happily, teaching 2nd grade.  It was a huge adjustment getting back into the working world full-time AND having 2 little boys running around at home.  Fortunately, I got hired back for the new school year before the summer and was able to store all of my teaching things at school (rather than our garage.)  However, I changed classrooms and it was crazy getting settled into my new room in August.  But, I love it!  It has been such a fantastic new school year with a really sweet group of students.  My days are so happy and I’m so grateful.  Other than allowing Ryuta to color my hair, highlight it, chop it, not much has changed for me.  I still love going out to eat sushi, rooting for the SF Giants, hanging with my family & friends, going out if I can (to shop or watch movies), and staying involved at church.

Kai
Kai turned 5 in September.  We pulled him out of preschool last year and spent the last months of his 4 year-old life doing what 4 year-old kids should do—a lot of playing, imagining, a lot of nothing (it’s pretty important!), reading.  Over the summer, Kai went on his first roller coaster at Happy Hallow and loved it!  Kai started TK (Transitional Kindergarten) in August at Gomes.  Every morning, he rides his bike to school with his dad and his brother.  This fall, he learned how to ride his 2-wheeler.  He’s such a big boy now!
He really transitioned well into the daily routines of school and is currently transforming his bedroom into a classroom.  He really loves school—learning how to spell, learning about the calendar, how to sing different songs (especially the “color songs”.)  It’s amazing how much he is learning at school and even just on his own at home.  He is so curious to learn.  Although with Kai, he is very specific and particular about what he likes.  Over the summer, the boys grew VERY attached to the Ice Age movies series.  Kai developed a big interest in maps, globes, and soon, we started to discuss earth history.  Why don’t mammoths and dinosaurs still live on the earth?  This led to talks about a possible asteroid that hit the earth and then, he became very obsessed with outer space and the solar system.  We got a family membership to the Chabot Space & Science Center for his birthday.  Kai has drawn multiple maps and built freeways with the exact directions to Chabot.  It’s amazing how he knows the roads, the freeways, the speed limits.  Kai has become such a little expert about the solar system that he has created lots of solar system art and has taught his 2 year-old brother the names of the planets.  The kid continues to amaze me.
Kai changed his color interest from green and yellow to red and blue.  He still really likes popsicles and chocolate chip cookies.  He has yet to try ice cream and has decided that he no longer likes cheese, spaghetti, or hot dogs.  But, we are so lucky that he is still a healthy eater and actually requests to eat broccoli!
For Halloween this year, I thought I’d get the easy way out this time and that Kai would want the astronaut costume at Costco.  My unique kid wanted to be a woolly mammoth!  Thank goodness my mom knows how to sew and was willing to help!  He was the cutest woolly mammoth ever. During the fall, Kai wore an eye patch to bed, to parties, and around the house, to be “Buck the Weasel” (from Ice Age 3.)  I thought I could get away with him being Buck for Halloween.  He insisted that he was Buck every day, but that he’d be a mammoth on Halloween.  That kid!

On Kai’s letter to Santa, he requested “solar system toys” and a “number line” (like in his classroom.)
"Dear Santa, I was a good boy. I would like solar system toys and a number line. Thank you. From, Kai."

Lukas
Lukas is still our affectionate, physical, active little monster.  Lukas turned 2 in June.  The kid thinks that his big brother is his personal punching bag and the little angel with the doll eyes shouts with this husky monster voice, runs, stomps, throws, kicks, climbs wherever he goes.  We had “sleep wars” most of the year.  I lost count, but currently, we are still on the losing end.  Lukas learned how to climb out of his crib and sneak into our room every night.  My goal over the summer was to sleep train him, but I think he tired me out and ending up winning the war.  We always start the night in separate rooms and I wake up to a foot in my face.  My students know that Lukas is a tiny ninja who moves quietly and quickly in the dark.  Lukas started gymnastics this summer and it’s been nice to let him have his own activity where he can be physical.  I’m thinking to eventually sign him up for a sport like soccer or martial arts.  Lukas loves being with people and can’t stay by himself.  He loves his big brother and likes what he likes—dinosaurs, planets, cars.
Lukas is still the destroyer while Kai is the builder.  Kai is order and Lukas is chaos.  That’s just part of being the little brother.  He is still our junk food baby and it has been a challenge to get him to eat healthy food, especially at dinner.  The boy will just eat carbs, fruit, yogurt, and if we let him, junk food (anything with high amounts of sugar!)
For Halloween, to stick with the Ice Age 3 theme, Lukas was a dinosaur (since big brother was a mammoth.)
On his letter to Santa, Lukas asked for “Santa clothes”, dinosaur, dinosaur clothes, dinosaur toys, and candy.

Trips, Changes, & Fun Stuff
We started the new year in San Diego visiting family and friends.  The boys had a blast with their cousins, Tay, Risa, and Brooke!  We even considered whether we could move down because it was so great to see all the kids out in the street together.  In April, Ryuta courageously flew with the boys to Japan to visit family.  I traveled 2 weeks later to meet up with them and we got to eat really well, relax, and spend time with Ryuta’s parents.  In July, Ryuta and I got to get away for a weekend and explore Seattle.  We had a really wonderful time exploring the city by bicycle and getting some alone time away from the kids.  Over the summer, I got to take it easy with the kids and we were so lucky.  My parents got us all a membership to the Aqua Adventure water park.  We were there at least once a week!  In October, our family got to get away for a weekend to the cute beach town called Avila Beach.
The boys loved playing at the pool and digging holes in the sand in the beach.  In November, my mom and I did our annual mother-daughter weekend and relaxed at the spa.  The timing was perfect!  I actually got to sleep in for daylight savings!  Happy birthday to me! J  The BIG change in our house was the kitchen remodel.  My mom has been anxious to remodel the kitchen for years and this year was her big break.  During September and October, we camped out in the garage and the backyard for all of our meals.  Remodeling is no joke, but we couldn’t be happier with the end result.  It is soooo nice to have such a beautiful kitchen with an open floor plan.  If we haven’t invited you over yet, we are taking advantage of such a nice space to be hospitable and to entertain.  So, please come on over and we’ll cook you something!

Well, 2014 is coming to a close and it has been a pretty good year.  We wish you a very merry Christmas & a happy new year!

Sincerely,
The Sanui Family--Ryuta, Somer, Kai & Lukas

Luke 2:11: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
